Museums in Vienna
Thanks to its glorious past, Vienna is home to roughly one hundred museums.
The Museum of Art History (Kunsthistorisches Museum) and the Museum of Natural History (Naturhistorisches Museum), the Albertina, and, of course, the MuseumsQuartier count among the city’s best-known museums. This latter is one of the world’s largest cultural areas. In addition to its two major museums, the Leopold Museum and the MUMOK, the MuseumsQuartier houses numerous independent cultural facilities waiting to be discovered. In addition, it is home to artists in residence who are able to live in Vienna for a length of time under the city’s sponsorship.
To fans of modernism, we recommend a visit to the Kunsthaus, inside the Hundertwasserhaus. It’s worth viewing from both the inside and outside!
Vienna offers a wide range of museums and cultural centres, of which we present but a small selection:
MuseumsQuartier
| Hotel | Walking distance |
|---|---|
| Hotel Stefanie | ca. 20 minutes |
| Hotel City Central | ca. 20 minutes |
| Hotel Capricorno | ca. 15 minutes |
| Hotel Am Parkring | ca. 10 minutes |
| Hotel Erzherzog Rainer | ca. 10 minutes |
The MuseumsQuartier opened in 2001. It houses the Leopold Collection, the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art), the KUNSTHALLE (Arts Centre) Wien, as well as various additional arts and cultural initiatives. Due to its large open spaces and its numerous cafes, it is very popular as a leisure oasis in the middle of the city, especially in summer.

Hundertwasserhaus
The famous Austrian painter and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser drew the plans for this extraordinary museum. In addition to the museum, the Hundertwasserhaus also contains numerous private apartments.
The Hundertwasserhaus is most easily reachable by public transport.
Crime Museum (Kriminalmuseum)
| Hotel | Walking distance |
|---|---|
| Hotel Stefanie | ca. 3 minutes |
| Hotel City Central | ca. 3 minutes |
| Hotel Capricorno | ca. 7 minutes |
| Hotel Am Parkring | ca. 15 minutes |
| Hotel Erzherzog Rainer | ca. 20 minutes |
A walk through the Crime Museum resurrects the dark side of Vienna over the past three centuries. Impressive are not only legendary cases such as the murderer Hofrichter, who poisoned his victims, but also a trip through the history of the judicial and police systems. Housed in one of Leopoldstadt’s oldest buildings, the so-called Seifensiederhaus, visitors to the Crime Museum can witness an architectural jewel from one of Vienna’s historic outskirts.

With the help of the psychologist’s youngest daughter, Anna Freud, a memorial to the founder of psychoanalysis was created in the former residence and office of Sigmund Freud. Original fixtures, among others the waiting room, provide insight into the biography of Sigmund Freud, his cultural environment, as well as his medical accomplishments. At Domgasse No. 5 is Mozart’s only Vienna apartment still in existence. The musical genius lived here rather opulently from 1784 to 1787. The exhibition of Mozart’s life and works chiefly explores the period in Vienna when he reached his creative peak.
