Frida Kahlo Exhibition in Vienna
First Extensive Retrospective in the Austrian Capital

FRIDA KAHLO Selbstbildnis mit Dornenhalsband, 1940
From September 1st 2010 until December 5th 2010 in Vienna you can discover the work of a unique Mexican artist with a cult following. The first extensive Frida Kahlo exhibition in Vienna will honour the pioneer of the feminist movement and most identifiable figure in Mexican culture.
During autumn 2010 the Bank Austria Art Forum presents 70 paintings and 30 drawings of Frida Kahlo who passed away in 1954.
A global myth: Frida Kahlo
Through her unique art the Mexican artist has became an icon with star power. Kahlo’s life was extensively woven into her artistic work. Throughout her life she had to fight the results of an almost fatal bus accident. She expressed her physical and psychological pain in finely drawn self portraits and orientated herself within the ideal of the Renaissance painting. Her surrealistic paintings are impressive and captivating, and her interesting life story has even been made into a Hollywood film.
Frida Kahlo exhibition in Vienna is a sensation
As well as paintings and drawings the Frida Kahlo exhibition in Vienna also includes a representative selection of photographic documentary material, which was arranged by Frida’s great niece. The artistic legacy of the impressive artist is predominantly held in private collections in Mexico and the US, from where most of Frida’s main work will be brought to Vienna for the exhibition. The sensational Frida Kahlo retrospective in Vienna is long overdue because of a lack of her work in European collections.
