Austrian and Viennese Wine Culture
Top wines from Austria
Among connoisseurs, Austrian wine is considered an absolute insiders’ tip. In recent years, Austrian wine-growers have achieved a remarkable increase in quality and rank today among the international elite. What’s remarkable is that cultivation areas in Austria are limited by natural conditions, and Austrian vineyards are tiny in comparison to other wine-growing countries. But it’s precisely that which accounts for an extremely high quality. In Austria, there are hardly wineries that can commit themselves to mass production – many top wine-growers have only a few hectares of cultivation area.
Viennese wine
The grounds within the city area are also special for wine-growing. Along the sunny slopes of the Alps’ foothills around the city there are now more than 320 wine-growers devoted to the cultivation of top-quality wine. In Vienna, white wines are produced, such as Grüner Veltliner, Rheinriesling, Gemischter Satz, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. But also red wine, such as Blauer Zweigelt, grows in the vineyards of quality wine-growers and furthers the international reputation of Viennese wines under the name ‘Vienna Classic’.
